Purpose of the question:

The job interview question, “Are you a team player?” is often asked to check whether the interviewee is comfortable to work alone or as a team. The answer should always be positive as most office performs operation in project basis and within a time frame which needs a group of employers to be working as a team.

Every company wants their employees are capable of working in a team environment. Thus every interviewee must have this quality to work comfortably as a part of a team. The project basis work is normally big which needs a lot of different skills to be combined for a positive result. It is not possible for a single person to do all the work and submit it in ahead of deadline. Every employee won’t be the best player in every sector as well, which is a fact. The best way to go is forming a team, dividing the responsibilities between different players, compromising the work and take the one which fits best for the project.When interviewers ask this question, the answer should always be “Yes, I am a team player”.

After that you must add some examples as evidence and back up your statement. If you don’t, then the next question will be, “Show some samples of your team work”. So, prepare some samples before the interview session. You can add some volunteer work that you did earlier or in college. You can also mention about your involve in the hockey team of college, where all the players nicely combined a team and won a few tournaments etc.

The sample answer could be:

“Yes, I am a team player and can adjust nicely with my team members. Being a team member, this is always important to respect others views and opinions. It is equally important to compromise my view in the sack of the project to be successful. I want every member of the team gets success to their part which aggregates a success for the team. I listen to everyone and share my knowledge with them if needed and do not bother to give credit if one deserves. For me, a group discussion always helps to exchange feedback and suggestion. More importantly, I am a likeable person and maintain a good communication with my fellow colleagues.”By saying this, you have mentioned all the qualities that a team player needs to have.

A trick question might come to your way like this, “Do you prefer to work independently or in a team?

To answer it, you have to support both qualities. You must prepare sample answers for both roles.

The answer can be:

“It depends on the necessity of the project. I am equally good as a leader and as a team player. My motto is always to complete the project in a successful manner and I can do everything which is possible from my side to make this happen. In my last job, I was alone assigned for a small project which I completed successfully and my hard work was appreciated by Boss. In college, I played an important role in my football team. So, I got success in both roles”. What should be avoided?Do not mention anything like you had any conflict with senior or junior about taking a decision and lastly your opinion was accepted. There is no glory in it rather it does not reflect your credential as a team player.

Key points to remember:

While working in a team environment, this is always important to respect the other members. So, what is your thought and assessment about their work and how you appreciate it carry some weight and should be mentioned in your answer.If you are asked to support only one role, then be diplomatic and avoid from supporting only one role rather let them inform that you are equally strong in both.
